2,300 Cancun real estate agents, only 200 actually licensed

Cancun, Q.R. — According to the president of the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals, more than 2,300 people buy and sell real estate in the city of Cancun, however, only 200 are licensed to do so.

Tayde Favila, president of the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals (Ampi) Cancún, says that there are approximately 2,300 people in the city of Cancun who are “advisors” buying and selling real estate, however, only 200 are actually licensed.

She says there is a regularization program for property sales agents in Quintana Roo, adding that the current trend is for related authorities to begin to verify and sanction those who are not regularized and who do not have their accreditation as a professional in that area.

Favila explained that the 200 licensed agents are those who are registered and have the knowledge and certification to perform real estate sales in Cancun. She adds that the state, like most states in the country, have laws that regulate real estate sales and those who are not regularized, are illegal.

She says that foreign clients who buy property in Cancun are accustomed to dealing with licensed agents. Their goal, she added, is to clamp down on those unaccredited “advisors” buying and selling real estate since, not only is it illegal, it can also result in fraud.
